William M. Barnwell

September 22, 1943 - May 9, 2020

William M. Barnwell, 76, of Hendersonville passed away Saturday, May 9, 2020. He was a native and life-long resident of Henderson County and a son of the late Florence Buckner and Rev. Odell James Barnwell. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Barbara Ann Cantrell Barnwell, and a brother, Lewis Barnwell.
William retired from Delta Airlines, where he held a variety of positions over the course of his career. He also worked at Hendersonville Home Systems as a carpenter, and was employed at Carolina Village for 18 years. He attended Hoopers Creek Church, and was known for his gentle spirit. A deeply devoted Christian, he loved his family. We grew to depend on him for his silent strength, his sense of humor, his smirk, his Thanksgiving turkey, his handyman abilities but mostly for his prayers. Our “Dad” and our “Mr. Will” was our silent angel on earth and now is our angel in heaven with his beloved wife.
William is survived by his children, Dr. Neil Barnwell and wife Annissa, and Tonya Robinson and husband Warren; step-children, Cheryl Justus and husband Michael, Donna Banks and husband Randy, Barbara Cheney, and Michael Young and wife Tricia; grandchildren, Dell Barnwell, C.J. and Larri Robinson, Paul Justus, Josh Laughter, Dr. Taylor Kirkman, Alexis Buckner, Emily and Molly Young, Vincent and Brandon Cheney, and Kristan Reid; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Roland Barnwell and wife Rachel, and Rev. Dewey Barnwell and wife Linda; sister, Doris Bagwell and husband Butch; sister-in-law, Shirley Barnwell; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at Hoopers Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Phillip Youngblood and Rev. Dewey Barnwell officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hoopers Creek Baptist Church.
