Ruth Carson

April 1, 1931 - June 25, 2013

Ruth T. Carson, of Hendersonville, 82, departed this life in the early morning on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at the Elizabeth House. She was born in Hendersonville on April 01, 1931 to the late John Willie and Bessie Thompson Sullivan. Ruth was also preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, James H. Carson; her brothers, Joseph, Moses and Bill Sullivan; her sisters, Leola Thompson, Gertrude Wilson and Beatrice Clary; and her grandson Jeremy Carroll.

Ruth attended Hendersonville Public Schools. She met and married the love of her life, James Henry Carson on November 8, 1947, and to this union five children were born. She was a member of Star of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and for many years served on the kitchen committee. She had a strong and abiding faith in the Lord. Despite her ailing health, she would always say that ìthe Lord has been good to me.î She loved gospel music and would sit and listen to various artists for hours. Her favorite song was ìAmazing Grace.î Besides gospel music she loved Prince and his movie ìPurple Rainî.

Ruth was a hard and dedicated worker. She was employed by the Sheltered Workshop (Something Special) of Hendersonville for 25 years working side by side with the clients to complete various tasks. She also worked for General Electric Company and Kimberly-Clark. She was a member of Diamond Circle Chapter Order of the Eastern Star No. 263, Prince Hall Affiliated in Hendersonville, where she served in many capacities including Treasurer.

Ruth was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She loved to go fishing with her friends and with her sons Bruce and Jerome. She said she was going to ìwet her hook.î On Monday and Friday nights you could find her watching wrestling. She was always an avid sports enthusiast so much so she had her children hooked on sports at an early age, spending Sunday afternoons rooting for her teams. She loved to cook and would have homemade biscuits or cornbread awaiting her husband when he got home from work and for her children when they got out of school. She was very creative in the kitchen and it would not take her long to put a meal together. She loved to share Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner with several seniors in the community.

She leaves to cherish her memory five children, Dianna, Hendersonville; Nathaniel (Karen), Newport, News, VA; Sandra and Bruce, Raleigh; and Jerome, Hendersonville; grandchildren, Nathaniel James (Lindsey), Candice Dennis (Chowan), Kristle, Kelsey, A. Unique and Rickie; great-grandchildren, Jamil, Jalen, Nathaniel James II and Alexis; one sister, Phoebia Sullivan Littlejohn; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends Ruth Clark, Carolyn King and Minnie Justice.

Before her passing she said that she was ready to go ìHomeî. Rest in peace Mama, we love you.

A funeral will be at 2:00pm Saturday at Star of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. C.E. Rowe will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. A guestbook or sympathy cards are available at
