Robert Metcalf

Robert C. Metcalf, of Hendersonville, NC and Charlestown, NH, passed away at Elizabeth House, Four Seasons Hospice, on Wednesday, December 16th 2009.

He was born in Hartford, CT on September 17, 1933, son of the late Robert and Margaret Christ Metcalf, and was also preceded in death by a sister, Dale Metcalf Bunch.

He was a graduate of The Choate School in Wallingford, CT, and St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, class of 1957, where he was a member of the Scabbard and Blade Military Honor Society. He served as a First Lieutenant in the Army from 1958 through 1959. A resident of Charlestown, NH for thirty-seven years, he was manager of systems and office services at Joy Manufacturing Co. in Claremont, NH and later became chief operator and chemist at the Claremont Water Treatment Plant. He served Charlestown at various times as a member of the Fall Mountain Regional District school board, the town planning board, the medical building board, and Board of Selectmen. He was a 4-H leader for many years, and served as the first president of the Sullivan County 4-H Foundation. Later, he became a volunteer blacksmith at Fort #4 Living History Museum. As a member of the Charlestown Congregational Church he served several terms as trustee and deacon. In 2004 he moved to Hendersonville, NC, but kept a summer cottage near his former Charlestown home.

In Hendersonville Mr. Metcalf became a member of the First United Methodist Church. He volunteered as a maintenance worker at the Johnson Farm, worked on a Habitat for Humanity building crew, and served as vice president of the Henderson County Bird Club. He served four years on the WolfPen II Homeowners Association Board. During retirement he pursued many interests. He was a Civil War buff and visited major battle sites, enjoyed birding and walking local trails, and traveled first throughout the southwest and later abroad after becoming a member of the Western North Carolina Friendship Force.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Rosamond Smith Metcalf; two sons, Charles Thomas Metcalf and his wife Karen of Weare, NH; Robert Michael Metcalf and his wife Tracy of Whispering Pines, NC; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Kaitlyn, Michael, Erin, and Christopher; and six nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Hendersonville First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, December 30th, at 2:00 pm. Memorials can be made to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 S. Allen Rd., Flat Rock, NC 28731; First United Methodist Church, 204 Sixth Avenue West, Hendersonville, NC 28739; or the Historic Johnson Farm, 3346 Haywood Rd., Hendersonville, NC 28791.
