Philip James Kottal, 92, passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Serenityís Gate Hospice in Perry, GA after a short illness. He was married for sixty-five years to the late Margaret Harper Kottal, who passed away in 2007. A veteran of WWII, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam era, he retired from the Navy and Merchant Marines. During his long retirement in Hendersonville, he was active in the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Polish Club, and Knights of Columbus ì7184î. He was a communicant at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was active with the Special Olympics, and for many years dedicated his Christmas Day to serving dinners to the homeless of Henderson County. He was the first Grand Marshall of Hendersonvilleís annual St. Patrickís Day Parade.

Survivors include a son, Kerry H. Kottal; a daughter, Nell Rose Wall and her husband Jerome; a sister, Rose Santiago; three grandsons, Kerry Paul Kottal, Kevin Kottal, Dane Lee Andrews; two great grandchildren, Kaleigh Rose Andrews, Justin Eamon Andrews; and several cousins in Baltimore, MD and Koblensk, Germany.

A funeral will be at 11:00 am Wednesday in the chapel of Forest Lawn Mortuary. Father John Salvas will officiate. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 am prior to the service in the chapel. Military rites will be conducted by Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post # 77, Hedrick-Rhodes VFW Post #5206, and DAV Chapter 14.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 S. Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
