Martha Sarah Thompson Hoots Justice, wife of Lester Oneal Justice of Jackson Loop Road in Upward, passed away October 27 at around 4 pm at Elizabeth House in East Flat Rock, after celebrating her 89th birthday on Sunday October 25. She was the daughter of the late Johnnie Sue Edwards Thompson and Henry DeWitt Thompson of Green Creek, NC. She was born in Mills River, NC, and raised in Polk and Rutherford Counties. Her sisters were Daisy Thompson Champion, Irene Thompson Champion Biggerstaff, and Arvie Thompson Brown and she had one brother, “Sonny” Henry DeWitt Thompson Jr., all who lived in Polk County before their deaths.
She married Edwin Lawrence Hoots December 24, 1950, who passed away March 7, 1986. They resided on Jackson Loop Road, Upward. They had two daughters, Judy Gail Hoots Dalton Palazzo and Janice Marcia Hoots Gilliam.
Martha worked at a hosiery mill, then as a food service worker at East Henderson High School, Hillandale and Dana Elementary Schools. She was a devoted Christian, mother and grandmother and was a member of Upward Holiness Baptist Church and attended Maranatha Baptist Church of East Flat Rock before she became homebound.
Martha married Lester Justice August 26, 1986, and they resided on Jackson Loop Road, Upward. In addition to her husband Lester Justice, she is survived by her two daughters: Judy Gail Hoots Dalton Palazzo of Hilton Head, SC, and Janice Marcia Hoots Gilliam and husband Austin Gilliam, of Blountville TN. She is survived by five grandchildren, Michelle Dalton Simpson and husband Chad Simpson of Hendersonville, Erica Dalton Wood and husband Barry Wood of Atlanta, GA., Chad Gilliam and wife Kristie of Hendersonville, Brad Gilliam and wife Kathy of Flat Rock, and Jerry Gilliam of Flat Rock. She was preceded in death by two grandsons, Jon David Gilliam, 1980-1981 (son of Janice and Austin Gilliam), and Jeremy Keith Dalton, 1975-1976 (son of Judy Hoots and Sam Dalton). Martha had five great- grandchildren, Evan Simpson, Kinley Gilliam, Kaila Gilliam, Grayson Gilliam, and Colton Gilliam. She had a step great-grand daughter, Lori Simpson, a step great-grandson JR Heatherly, and a step great-great grandson, Sawyer Heatherly.
Martha is also survived by four step daughters (Lester and Charlotte Justice’s daughters), Shelby and husband Gary Blackwell, Terrie and husband Clyde Garren, Pam and husband Malcolm Johnson, and Kim and husband Larry Ogle, all of Hendersonville. She had seven step grandchildren, Gary Lee Blackwell and wife Becca, Robbie Garren and wife Sam, Joey Garren and wife Wendy, Timmy Garren and wife Tiffany, Andrew Johnson, Alecia Davis and husband Roger Fletcher, and Ricky Davis and wife Emily Davis. And five step great- grandchildren, Dallas and Peyton Blackwell, Analyn Garren, Zander Garren, and Madison Fletcher, all of Hendersonville, NC.
The family will receive friends at the Lester Justice home on Jackson Loop Road, in Upward. Funeral services will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church, Allen Road, East Flat Rock Thursday, October 29, 2015, with visitation at 12:30 P.M., and funeral at 2 P.M.. A graveside service will be held after the funeral at Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Tracy Grove Road. Ministers Lewis Staton and Steve Gibbs and Marion Eugene Champion, nephew and Gideon, will conduct the funeral services. Memorials may be made to the Gideons or the Martha Sarah Thompson Hoots Justice Scholarship at Northeast State Community College, PO Box 246, 2425 Hwy 75, Blountville, TN 37617.
