Martha Opal Suttles-Stepp-Duncan

March 16, 1932 - December 11, 2018

Martha “Opal” Suttles-Stepp-Duncan

Born March 16, 1932, Opal went home to be with the Lord after a short illness on December 11, 2018. She is looking forward to being with Jesus and her family that is waiting for her in heaven. No more hurt and sadness for Opal, she will be waiting for her loved ones at Jesus’ feet.

She was preceded in death by her parents Dallas and Cary Kilpatrick Suttles; by spouses Calvin Stepp (38 years) and Billy “Chinaman” Duncan (17 years) and by her sisters Jannie Kimbrell and Allene Rhodes.

Her greatest achievement was that she worked until she was 80 years old. She began at age 13 at Osceola Inn to help support her family. Family was of the utmost importance to her. She worked at G.E. and when she retired just couldn’t stand not working and went to work for Ingles on Highland Lake Road  for 15 years.

She loved, laughed and worked hard her entire life, usually so she could care for someone else. She loved her flowers and to cook. She would never let you leave hungry.

Opal is survived by her daughter Geraldine (Mick) Frey; grandchildren Kari (Brian) Jolly, Robert Beckwith and Emily (Kenny) Sherlin; great-grandchildren Kate Jolly, Matt Jolly and Caryn Beckwith and brothers Daniel (LouElla) Suttles and Jesse Suttles. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and special loved ones; Mary Suttles and Carolyn Laughter, John and Carolyn McKinney, Carolyn and Bill Brown – and we can’t forget Christy.

A funeral will be held 11 AM Saturday, December 22, in the chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Rev. Jerry Mullinax will officiate. Burial will follow in the Veterans section of Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive guests from 5 until 7 PM Friday, December 21, at Forest Lawn Funeral Home.

Opal said she had her flowers while she was here on earth and that if you would like to do something in her honor please give to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl. Memphis, TN 38105 or by clicking Here, or to the Ronald McDonald House, JPMorgan Chase 131S Dearborn, 6th floor Chicago, IL 60603 Attn: Ronald McDonald House Charities Inc.  Lockbox #26345 or by clicking Here.  Both held a special place in her heart.
