So often we wait until the loss of a loved one to truly appreciate their affect on our own lives. I hope that I can continue to let people know how much I love them in their living years. I will always remember Aunt Marian as a devout Christian who loved the Lord and did her best to raise a fine family. She played the organ and piano so beautifully...I remember walking into the house one day when they lived in Miami Lakes, and she was playing the Doctor Zhivago song "Lara's Theme" and it was so beautiful. I just wanted to sit and listen but she became a little bashful and stopped playing. My childhood memories of Aunt Marian, takes me to a place of much laughter and joy like when all of us cousins would get together and play. Marian didn't allow "rough-housing" inside, so we mainly played a lot outside. Our family was big on sports of any kind, and backyards often became softball/football fields, horseshoe tournaments, badminton competitions or a place for foot-races to see who was the fastest runner. Kool-Aid was the drink of the day or a quick slurp out of the garden hose. Being raised in south Florida, we all ran around bare-footed most of the time. Family reunions, however brief, were spent catching up on each of our lives, sharing pictures and of course, the family "stories" that were told again and again. My first memory was of a family vacation to the cabin in Boone one summer (as told to me later by my Mother as we were hiking at the time). My sister Jenny (about 3 or 4 yrs. old) and Suzanne decided to poke a hornetís nest down by the creek with a stick and the swarm came after them biting Jenny all over. Uncle Dick came running out in his overalls and placed Jenny in the creek, the hornets flew down his overalls and he quickly took them off! Up pulls Aunt Helen in a taxi and there stood Uncle Dick in his shorts! Aunt Marian laughed so hard. Another time when my sister Jenny and I were in our early teens we stayed at the cabin with Marian, Danny, Suzanne and little David. We went berry picking, hiking and enjoying the beautiful Blue Ridge area. We'd stay up all night playing board games, especially Monopoly. A humorous moment happened one day when the septic tank overflowed and had to be dug out. Aunt Marian put Danny to the task with a clothes-pin on his nose. Eventually, I came out to help as best I could but Aunt Marian insisted this wasn't girls work. Never a dull moment with the Shaffer's! My two sisters and I (Mary Lee and Jenny) always enjoyed Aunt Marian's good cooking. She often cooked dishes the we didnít see at our home, like sweet-potatoes with marshmallows on top, or my favorites ñ Waldorf Salad and some kind of green marshmallow/nuts/fruit and cool whip type dessert. For several years when we lived close to the Miami area, our family would get together for Thanksgiving dinner and then afterwards Aunt Marian and our Mom (Joan) would make up a bunch of turkey sandwiches and we all loaded in the family station-wagon and went to the Orange Bowl to watch the high school football teams play. Uncle Dick, Steve, Danny, Suzanne and David: I will truly miss Aunt Marian and know that where she is now, is a most beautiful place with many relatives and friends to visit. I am sad that I could not attend the service, but please know that my heart is full and I want to send my prayers and love and hugs to you. XOXOXO Love, Patty Shaffer (Havana, FL)

I remember visiting my grandmother ëMaí in Hialeah and riding my bike between Maís house and Uncle Dick and Aunt Marianís house down the road to play with my younger cousin Suzanne. Aunt Marian watched for me to arrive and never failed to have something yummy to eat! She always looked beautiful in her dresses, and had a way of keeping all of us happy with her calm voice of reason and genuine kindness. I also have a memory of her singing softly when busy around the house. I will fondly remember the trips to the cabin in Boone; the sound of the creek; juicy watermelon; and Daisy the Dog! With our parents (Dave and Joan) and Uncle Dick and Aunt Marian, the Shaffer kids had good times as children and young adults while living closer together in Florida. Although we havenít seen each other in a while, I have fond memories of our times together back then. My husband Ken and I extend our deepest sympathy to Uncle Dick, Cousins Steve, Danny and Suzanne and families for their loss. Dear Uncle Dick and Family - I am so sorry for the loss of your wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Aunt Marian was a wonderful woman who I remember with fondness and laughter. I will miss her very much. She taught me many things over the years and I was always impressed with her devotion to God and serving others be it family, neighbors and friends throughout her life. I will always remember her gentle ways and loving smile and great wit and sense of humor. She was a wonderful cook and very health conscious. I remember in her early 70's she and your dad would still play tennis. Briefly I recall Suzanne's strawberry milk, Danny's cornflakes with honey, and Steve's guitar playing and hunting and fishing skills. David I didn't know you well but I do remember the Tiger's Milk product your mom always prepared for you. Daisy the beagle who got out one night at the cabin and ran up the back hill howling and waking everyone up! The creek, the daddy long-leg spiders and Marian always telling us to be careful of the bees! Most of us listen to her (remember Suzanne and Jenny) Blackberry mountain comes to mind and Aunt Marian was the first to take us up there one summer. The last time I visited Hendersonville was a few months after my dad's death and I remember sitting at the piano and playing a few songs for Marian, she sat real close to me and listened so intently. I will always cherish those memories. I also played my dulcimer for her and she enjoyed that too. May your faith and wonderful memories of Marian sustain you and know that many of her loved ones long passed are rejoicing with her now. I know without doubt we will all see each other again.
