Maj. Leo John Gecewicz, age 88, of Hendersonville, NC died late Thursday evening, April 18, 2019 at his home after an extended illness with his family near his side.

Mr. Gecewicz was born on Tuesday, May 27, 1930 in Drums, PA to the late Joseph and Helen “Leona” (Wasilewski) Gecewicz.  On September 30, 1965 in Orlando, FL he married his wife of 53 years, the former Gwen Lee Shiver who survives.

In September 1950, Mr. Gecewicz entered the United States Army serving his country as a Private, 1st Class and was honorably discharged in May of 1952.  He later enter the United States Air Force in July, 1954 where he earned the rank of Major until his retirement in December of 1974.  Upon returning home to the States, he moved to Orlando, FL and became the Director of Transportation for Lynx for 10 years and later made his home in Hendersonville, NC to enjoy his golden years with his family.  He was a faithful member of St. James Episcopal Church of Hendersonville, NC and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind to cherish his memory his two sons, Michael John Gecewicz of Hendersonville, NC and David Lee Gecewicz and his wife, Yvonne of Arlington, VA.  Also surviving are his two grandchildren, Lara and Kirsten along with several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services to celebrate Maj. Gecewicz’s life will be conducted at nine o’clock Wednesday morning, October 16, 2019 in the Fort Myer Post Chapel in Fort Myer, VA with committal services with full military honors to follow in Arlington National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be offered on behalf of Mr. Gecewicz to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC, 28731.

Leo will be forever missed by his loving family and many friends.  May God grant him eternal rest.
