Laura Lane Smutny

July 26, 1950 - February 2, 2019

Laura Lane Smutny, born July 26, 1950, quietly passed away in her home in Hendersonville, North Carolina, after a prolonged struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Laura was a free-lance interior designer who worked in Atlanta, Denver, Portland and Boston before returning with her husband to her beloved Hendersonville. Laura and Bill immediately joined Mud Creek Baptist Church and Laura became a member of the choir, singing joyfully for many years. Anyone who knew her would say that Laura always lived a life of love, devoting herself to her husband, children, grandchildren, and friends. Having never met a stranger, she leaves behind many friends and a legacy of kindness and caring.  Shortly after her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, Laura began to share her story to help others. She was instrumental in starting support groups for those with a diagnosis of dementia and their spouses, further evidence of her passion for helping others.

Laura is survived by her loving husband, William; a devoted brother, Robert Lane, a son, Kendall Golightly and his wife, Allyson of Atlanta; a daughter, Keri Murray and her husband, Jefferson of Augusta and 5 grandchildren, Ava and Quinn Golightly, Sarah Anne, Mary Hunt, and Jefferson Murray.

Visitation will be held at Mud Creek Baptist Church on Thursday Feb 07, 2019 beginning at 1:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service starting at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to MemoryCare, a clinic devoted to the treatment of dementia patients and their families, 100 Far Horizons Lane, Asheville NC 28803.
