Joseph John Smitelli, Jr.

January 28, 1935 - January 19, 2021

On Tuesday, January 19th, 2021, Joseph John Smitelli Jr., loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and in-law passed away just nine days prior to his 86th birthday.

Joe was born in Queens New York on January 28th, 1935 to Joseph J. and Mary Smitelli. After graduating from high school in 1953 he went to work for Republic Aircraft. In 1956 he married Kathy Goldhorn who he was married to for forty-five years until she preceded him in death in 2001.
Joe also served in the Army where he received an honorable discharge in 1964. Joe then went to work for Grumman Aerospace where he worked on many of our nation’s high-profile aerospace programs to include Americas “Apollo program” where Grumman was responsible for building, testing and readying the lunar module for launch to the moon.
During his 36 year career at Grumman, he went to night school earning an Associate of Science degree in business management.
He loved his wife, all family members, and friends very deeply. He adored his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He bragged endlessly and was very proud of their many accomplishments.
Joe’s hobbies included carpentry, woodworking, masonry, and traveling with Connie. He will be remembered mostly for his deep love of family and generosity to all he knew.
Joe is survived by his loving wife Connie, his two children, Joey Smitelli and Donna Hoffman. His brother Carl Smitelli, three step-children, James Vincent and Terry. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, two nephews a niece, and many loving in-laws.
A family funeral service will be held on Friday, January 22nd, at Forrest Lawn Funeral Home, Chapel and Cemetery at 11:00 AM where he will also be laid to rest.
