John K. Dixon, Jr, 84, of Hendersonville, NC, peacefully passed away on March 28, 2018 to be with his Heavenly Father and beloved wife, Priscilla. At the time of his death he was being lovingly cared for at Elizabeth House, a Hospice care facility in Flat Rock, NC.
John was born on May 5, 1933 in Adams Center, NY, to John Kenneth and Morna (Murray) Dixon. As a 1951 graduate of Adams Center High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps and honorably and actively served his country from 1951-1954. He was a proud veteran, having served in the Korean War with the 1st Marine Division. John was a sergeant with the 2nd Marine Division at the time of his discharge. While in the service John married his childhood sweetheart, Priscilla Nan Ryor, in Rodman, NY. Upon discharge, the Dixon’s moved to Adams Center where he worked for Carl E. Fassett, learning the trade of meat cutting under the GI Bill. From 1956-1962 John worked as a city patrolman for the Watertown Police Department. In 1962, John and Priscilla purchased and operated a grocery store in Copenhagen. Their store remained in business for 27 years. After deciding to close his business, and until his retirement, John worked for Bouyea Fassett’s Bakery as a manager of their two Watertown stores. Although John worked long, often hard, hours throughout his lifetime, the one thing that always remained constant was the love for his family.
After retirement, the Dixon’s moved to Hendersonville, NC to enjoy the more temperate climate. They returned to Northern NY for many summers to enjoy friends, family, and the family cottage on Hyde Lake. John, an avid outdoorsman, had a love of hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed playing softball, tennis and had exceptional skills in playing table tennis. His family will miss the joyful times shared around the ping-pong table with him. John was a past President of Riverside Cemetery in Copenhagen and also of Copenhagen Christian Radio, a charter member of the Copenhagen Civic Corporation, and had been an active member of the United Church of Copenhagen.
John is survived by his daughter, Laurinda D. Stockwell, of Norwood, NY, his son, Kevin J. Dixon and wife, Laura, of West Winfield, NY, and granddaughter, Gabrielle Dixon. He is also survived by his sister, Candace (Jack) Elmer of Adams Center, NY, brother-in-law Lawrence Roberts, Cherryville, NC, cousins, and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by Priscilla, his wife of 63 years, his parents, his sister Kathy (Lawrence) Roberts and an infant brother, Gerald.
