Catherine Weiser O'Donnell

Catherine Weiser Jaubert O’Donnell, 95, died Saturday, May 18, 2019. A resident of Hendersonville, North Carolina following Hurricane Katrina, Catherine was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, and graduated from Eleanor McMain High School. She attended the University of New Mexico in Las Cruces where she was a cheerleader and pledged Chi Omega. An accomplished seamstress, Catherine was studying Home Economics until the start of World War II. She subsequently channeled her love for sewing, cooking and gardening into making a home for her three daughters, grandson Russ and husband of 43 years, James F. O’Donnell.

After raising their children, Catherine worked for Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans until her retirement, and then volunteered in the Emergency Room at East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie, Louisiana. She was a founding member of New Orleans City Park’s Christmas in the Oaks, which Jim had designed, an active member of the Friends of the City Park Botanical Garden, Bissonet-Maned Downs Garden Club, Bissonet-Maned Downs Country Club, and various other civic and recreational organizations. She received a Certificate of Merit from New Orleans Mayor Ernest Morial for her civic engagement.

Following Jim’s death, Catherine reunited with childhood sweetheart Angelo J. (A.J.) Gumina, with whom she traveled extensively throughout the country.

Catherine was preceded in death by her mother, Esther Hauck Jaubert; stepfather, George Jaubert; husband, James; daughter, Robin O’Donnell Ott; and great-grandson, Nolan Woolley.

She is survived by A.J., her loving companion of 26 years; daughters Karen O’Donnell Diemont (Dave) of McKinney, Texas, and Jamie O’Donnell Gaines of Lake Charles, Louisiana; seven grandchildren: James Diemont (Camille) of Allen, Texas, and Christopher Diemont (Erica) of McKinney, Texas; Sean Russel Ott (Laci) of Hendersonville, North Carolina; Sarah Gaines Woolley (Christopher) of Willis, Texas, Rebecca Gaines Yelverton (Justin) of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Emily Gaines Reiner (Austin) of Brighton, Colorado, and Christopher Gaines, Jr. (Jennette) of Westminster, Colorado; and thirteen great-grandchildren: Jason, Joseph, Harmon, Cooper, and Abbygeal Diemont; Chloe, Marlee, Sadie and Lucas Woolley; Xander Robinson; Andrew and Charlotte Ott; and Leah Yelverton.
