Betty Lou MaGruder, 76, of Hendersonville passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the Elizabeth House.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and had retired as a house mother from the N.C. School for the Deaf in Morganton. Betty Lou had also worked at Pine Park, Spring Haven Retirement and had taught sign language at Blue Ridge Community College. She loved Bingo, cats, Bible study and was active in the Elks Lodge and Does. Betty Lou found comfort, as she dealt with the effects of Alzheimer’s, in her sister-in-law’s 80lb Lab/Pit mix Captain. She would pet him for hours as he would let her do whatever she wanted to him. During her last two years she loved to talk about the bible, compassion for other people, her life as a deaf person and how much she loved her husband and Captain.
She is survived by her loving husband of 29 years, Gene Ray; sister, Joann Fain and her husband, David; sister-in-law, Nell MaGruder and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial mass will be held at 10 am on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Blue Ridge Humane Society, Elizabeth House, Alzheimer’s Foundation or Immaculate Conception.
