Travis Lee Brown
September 14, 1918 - June 16, 2009


Travis Lee Brown, Sr., 90, of Hendersonville passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation. A native of Henderson County, he was the son of the late Oliver Mack and Ola Bishop Brown, and the husband of the late Jane Elizabeth Wilson Brown. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie “Lark” Brown.

He attended Brevard College and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and was employed by Sutherland Insurance Company for fifty years. He proudly served his country flying two tours of duty, (seventy missions), with the 12th Air Corp, 84th Squadron during WWII. He was a life member of the American Legion and VFW, serving as past commander of American Legion Post #77, 1980-1982, past commander of VFW Post #5206, 1971-72, All-State Quartermaster VFW, 1984-85, and a member of 40 Hommes et 8 Chevaux. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hendersonville.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathie Brown Whittemore and her husband Ron of Fletcher; two sons, Lee Brown and his wife Myra of Greenville, NC, George Brown of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren, Scott Whittemore and his wife Sarah of Orlando, FL, Courtney and Josiah Gunter of Atlanta, GA, Erin Kawasaki and her husband Chris of Winterville, NC, Jonathan Brown of Greenville, NC; and one great granddaughter, Crystal Kawasaki.

A funeral will be held at 4:00 pm Friday, June 19, 2009 in the chapel of Forest Lawn Mortuary. Dr. Gordon Elliott will officiate. The family will greet friends following the service. Military honors will be presented by Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post #77, Hedrick-Rhodes VFW Post # 5206, and DAV Chapter 14. Entombment will be private.
