William Paul "Bill" Cross

December 4, 1927 - September 24, 2017

William “Bill” Cross, 89, of Hendersonville died Sunday September 24, 2017 while in the care of the Canandaigua NY VA Medical Facility. Bill was born December 4, 1927 in Lexington, NY to the late Alvah and Anna Patterson Cross. He was also preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Darlene Smead, November 6, 2004, and his wife, Virginia, February 15, 2006.

Bill married Virginia Becker from Prattsville, NY on August 10, 1952. They relocated from Voorheesville, NY to Hendersonville in 1982 following Bill’s retirement from the Albany County Government Resources as the Building Maintenance Supervisor. After Virginia passed away, Bill spent much time at his home in Hendersonville, often visiting with his children and their families.

Bill was a combat-wounded, US Marine Corp, Korean War veteran. While serving in North Korea, Bill’s Marine Corp division was one of the 15000 Allied ground troops surrounded at the Chosin Reservoir by Chinese troops in frigid North Korea November/December 1950. On Bill’s 23rd birthday, December 4, 1950, Bill was severely wounded at Toktong Pass. Bill sustained a bullet wound square between the eyes, passing through his head and exiting at the base of his skull. Miraculously he survived, but lasting effects from his injuries became more and more pronounced as he aged, and subsequently led to complications, causing his death. Despite this traumatic injury Bill led a normal productive life.

Bill was a loving, dedicated husband and father. His family was always the focus of his life and one of his main goals and priorities was providing his children whatever support to ensure that their future and opportunities were the best possible.

Survivors include his sons and daughters, Paul Cross of Chattanooga, TN, Jackie Rachmyer of Victor, NY, Edward Cross of Lexington, KY, Laurie Turner of Augusta, GA, and Darlene’s husband Dr. Bryan Smead of Lake George, NY; 14 grandchildren, Adam Smead, Nathan Smead, Abby (Smead) Lynch, Amy (Cross) Slattery, US Navy Lt. Commander Erik (Cross) Dente, Jeremy Bozzelli, Justin Bozzelli, Nick Bozzelli, Chelsea (Rackmyer) Metzger, Zach Cross (US Navy Veteran), Kayla (Cross) Ramic , Tres Turner, Will Turner, and Faith Turner; 7 great grandchildren, Gabriel, Evelyn, and Elliot Slattery, Simone Smead, Bailey and Harper Bozzelli, and Mia Ramic.

A graveside service with Military Honors will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 pm prior to the service in the Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Bill will be laid to rest next to his wife, Virginia.
