Walter Andrew Hough

May 3, 1932 - February 4, 2018

Walter Andrew Hough, 85, of Hendersonville, NC, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family Sunday evening, February 4, 2018. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Hough was a son of the late Ashbel Fairchild and Lorna Small Hough.

He was married for more than 50 years to his beloved wife, Frances Evelyn (Baker) Hough, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Winnie Virginia Hough and his daughter’s partner, Sarah Ruth Briggs of Asheville, NC; his siblings Richard Hough, of Windsor, CO; Stephen Hough and wife, Maria, of Blackwood, NJ; and Thomas Hough and wife, Gail, of King of Prussia, PA; as well as many loving relatives and friends.

Dr. Hough was proud to be a second-generation forester and received his B.A. in Forestry from Pennsylvania State University, and both his Master’s degree and Doctor of Forestry, specializing in forest ecology and plant physiology, from Duke University. He started his professional career with U.S. Forest Service in the Pisgah National Forest in NC and, after returning from military leave where he served in the U.S. Navy, worked in Macon, GA where he met and married Frances Baker. He went on to work in Washington, DC, Asheville, NC and retired as Assistant Director for Continuing Research at the Southern Forest Experiment station in New Orleans, LA after almost 39 years of service.

Walter and Frances moved to Hendersonville in 1999 and he shared his love for nature, the outdoors and the environment by continuing to volunteer after his retirement for the Forest Service, the Nature Conservancy and The North Carolina Arboretum. He and Frances loved to garden, cook and travel together, all passions he passed on to his daughter. From his childhood summers spent with his brothers in the Kane Experimental Forest in PA, to tent-camping at age 80 in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to see the synchronous fireflies, Walter had a joyful, adventurous and gentle spirit. He treasured his time with family, friends and beloved pets and was a loving person who will be dearly missed.

A celebration of life will be held at Forest Lawn Funeral Home in Hendersonville on Sunday, February 11 at 2 o’clock. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to express gratitude to Care Partners Adult Day Program-Hendersonville, Four Seasons Hospice and the very special caregivers who shared their kindness and support.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The North Carolina Arboretum Society Tribute Program, 100 Frederick Law Olmsted Way, Asheville, NC 28806.
