Major Richard S. Swift, 88, of Hendersonville passed away Monday, March 26, 2018 at Carolina Village Medical Center.
Richard was born in Jacksonville, FL on November 24, 1929 and was the son of the late Frank and Lucille Swift. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Swift and his grandson, Stephen Dodrill.
While attending Georgia Tech., he joined the US Air Force Aviation Cadet Program. After graduation he continued his love of flying by joining the US Air Force where he became a single engine fighter pilot. He retired in 1975 after proudly serving his country for twenty years.
Richard’s passion for serving continued after retirement with the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). He was very instrumental in the fight to ensure that federal military pensions were not taxed in North Carolina. He served in various positions within the organization, up to and including president.
He was an avid lover of traveling and managed to see most of the world. He shared his adventures with many of his friends and family. He did enjoy cruising and many surprise weekend trips.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Martha Quinn Swift; daughters Colette S. Ladbrook (Warren), Cathron Dodrill (David), Emily Gideon (Joshua), Jacquelyn (Michael Culbertson), Janet Quinn; fourteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his brother, John Swift of Marietta, GA.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, April 7, 2018 in the Carolina Village Hall.
A military graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Sharon United Methodist Church Cemetery, 1421 Reidsville Sharon Road, Greer, SC 29651. Richard and his wife are members of this church and also associate members of Hendersonville First United Methodist Church.
